  19. government's response upon learning that Iran's leading cleric,
  20. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had renewed the decree condemning Salman
  21. Rushdie to death. The edict, which Khamenei reaffirmed as "irrevocable
  22. and binding," accuses the Indian-born author of blasphemy; $2
  23. million (plus expenses) is promised to anyone who murders him.
  24. For good measure, two-thirds of Iran's parliament backed the
  25. mullah's speech. Rushdie has spent four years in hiding since
  26. writing The Satanic Verses.
